Description Anadrol is the brand name for oxymetholone, a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) that was formerly prescribed for medical conditions but was discontinued in the United States due to its potential for abuse and severe side effects. Despite its discontinuation in some regions, it is still misused by athletes and bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and strength. Medical uses Originally developed in the 1960s, Anadrol was approved for the following medical applications: Anemia: It was primarily used to treat certain types of anemia caused by deficient red blood cell production, such as aplastic anemia and myelofibrosis. It works by stimulating the production of erythropoietin, a hormone that promotes red blood cell formation. Wasting diseases: The drug was also used to promote weight gain and muscle growth in patients suffering from wasting syndromes, such as those associated with HIV/AIDS. Osteoporosis: Anadrol was also investigated as a treatment for osteoporosis. Adverse effects Anadrol is a potent drug with significant and potentially life-threatening side effects, especially with long-term use or abuse. Physical side effects Liver damage: Anadrol is hepatotoxic (toxic to the liver). Long-term use can lead to liver tumors, liver cancer, cirrhosis, and blood-filled cysts in the liver and spleen. Cardiovascular issues: It can cause changes in cholesterol levels, specifically decreasing “good” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and increasing “bad” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It can also increase blood pressure, which elevates the risk of heart attack and stroke. Hormonal disruptions: Anadrol can suppress the body’s natural production of testosterone, which can lead to reduced sperm count and shrinking of the testicles in men. In men: Other effects can include painful or prolonged erections and breast enlargement (gynecomastia). In women: Side effects can include masculinizing effects, such as a deepened voice, excessive body and facial hair, menstrual irregularities, and an enlarged clitoris. Adolescents: In adolescents who are still growing, anabolic steroids can cause the premature closing of bone growth plates, leading to stunted growth. Psychological side effects Abuse of Anadrol can lead to a range of severe psychological issues: Behavioral changes: Users may experience extreme irritability, aggression (often called “roid rage”), paranoid jealousy, and mood swings. Psychotic symptoms: In some cases, steroid abuse can lead to delusions and mania.
